Have you ever heard of Pendleton blankets? Well, I haven't and I think they are quite beautiful. I'd love to have one thrown over my sofa, or in a bedroom, or even just folded up in my living room for a pretty spare blanket. The company is a family owned and run business and they have been designing these western native American blankets for approximately 96 years. They also have pillows and other accessories, but I thought the blankets were their best pieces.
This project takes energy and prayers to the the Great Spirit. One of our early projects for Colorado Forest Products that was displayed in a booth at the Colorado Log Home Show along with other woodworkers projects. The Lodgepole pine log this obelisk was milled from we removed from Golden Gate State Park as part of a fuel reductions project. Joe milled the obelisk on a Woodmizer Band Mill. The obelisk has 28 different carvings, 7 on each side. Each side’s carvings are oriented to a compass direction and linked by meaning with the direction they are located on. The obelisk carvings can be read as a story both vertically on each side and also in a spiral going around the obelisk. We have all the meanings of all 28 carvings in a written legend available with the obelisk. I designed the carvings and had 80 hours into carving and many more hours into the research behind the design. This was my first carving project. The obelisk is stained with a water base County Pine Finish and coated with a Polyacrylic satin topcoat. The obelisk is 76” high with a 16” x 16” x 4” high base.
